When the infamous chandelier is uncovered, computer imaging changes the black and white run down shell into its former, color glory (this technique is already feeling overused - see "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events"). As on the stage, the film begins with a public auction at the rundown old Opera building, where the Vicompte Raoul de Chagny (Patrick Wilson, "The Alamo") and the opera's former ballet mistress Madame Giry (Miranda Richardson, "The Hours") vie for a cymbal-clapping monkey music box. Panicked, they turn to up and coming ingenue Christine (Emmy Rossum, "Mystic River"), who doesn't realize that the unseen 'Angel of Music' who has been giving her voice training is none other than "The Phantom of the Opera." Laura: The long awaited screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage hit features beautiful, if artificial, production design and a genuinely stirring finale, but the uninspired casting of the love triangle leads and the blandness of many of the musical's songs make for many dead spots along the way. It sent shivers up my spine and gave me goosebumps.Opera Populaire diva Carlotta (Minnie Driver, "Ella Enchanted") is displeased when the new managers, Messieurs Firmin (CiarĂ¡n Hinds, "Veronica Guerin") and Andre (Simon Callow, "Bright Young Things"), fail to fall over themselves for her enough and walks out of a rehearsal. Overall, I rate this film a 5/5 and definitely recommend it. I wouldn't be surprised if more roles in Hollywood turned up for her. Miss Ellison has been trained in acting, singing and dancing and so was well equipped to the play the part, and carried it off very well. Another pleasant surprise is that Jennifer Ellison was actually rather good in her role as Meg, Christine's best friend. Watching the Phantom and Raoul, certainly separated the boys from the men and the girls from the women. Butler played him, was so sexy and he drew the WOMEN to him. I actually ended up warming to him, and when asked by my boyfriend who I would choose Raoul or the Phantom, I said the Phantom.

Although his vocal skills weren't entirely right for the part, he portrayed the Phantom as a lot of people see him as a victim. However, the star of the piece for me, was Gerard Butler (the Phantom). Although Raoul seemed a bit wet and droopy, he was still gorgeous and made the GIRLS in the audience swoon. Patrick Wilson (Raoul), out of all of them, had the most captivating voice.
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 2004 DRIVER
Driver did not do all the vocals herself). Her singing was overdone to add to the character (even though Ms. Her hand gestures added to the mannerisms of a typical diva. Minnie Driver (La Carlotta) was very funny in her Italian diva role. When she started to sing, my mouth literally dropped open. Emmy Rossum (Christine) was 17 when this was filmed and was absolutely outstanding. The theatre set itself was absolutely stunning marble and velvet being the main materials within it. France is known for its beauty, and this adaption certainly paid homage to that. Although I have never seen it on-stage, the film version - for me - was so enchanting that I now cannot wait to obtain tickets to it. I dragged my long suffering boyfriend to see The Phantom of the Opera on Sunday, and was pleasantly surprised by it.
